Pro-Life Advances

We’ve all seen the topic of abortion streaming across social media, and I know we’ve all been horrified by some of the laws that have been passed recently. It’s easy to get pulled into despair when the task at hand looks too large to tackle. But now, more than ever, we must press on to defend life! I believe God will use this publicity to open the eyes of His followers so that they will get involved, as well as open the eyes of His lost children blinded by the lies of Satan. Now is not the time for retreat, it’s the time to speak up and fight.

As an encouragement to you all, I wanted to highlight some of the positive laws that are being passed, which rarely make the mainstream media. Here is proof that God is working and His people are accomplishing great things:

State-of-the-State-2015_1_810_500_75_s_c11. Mississippi will soon become the latest state to ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. Last month, both the House and the Senate voted to pass the bill by Republican state Senators Angela Hill and Chris Caughman, which makes exceptions only to save a woman’s life or prevent harm to a “major bodily function.” Violators could have their medical licenses suspended or revoked.

  • This is a HUGE win for the unborn! Did you know a baby’s heart begins to beat just 22 days after conception? So when a woman is just 5 weeks pregnant (based on her last period) she can already hear or see her baby’s heart beating – praise God for the protection those little ones will receive in Mississippi.

The resolution passed the House 78-5. After passing the resolution condemning New York, the Kansas House Health and Human Services Committee voted to endorse House Bill 2274, which requires abortion providers to inform mothers in writing as well as by telephone or in person that even while they are in the midst of a medication abortion it may be halted. Kansas is the first state in the nation to pass such a resolution. In a statement, the Family Policy Alliance of Kansas predicted that other states will follow Kansas’ lead.

  • That is an incredibly bold resolution, I encourage you to look up and read the resolution in detail. They totally called out the New York Reproductive Health Act in several areas of violating rights, health and protection. I especially appreciate their acknowledgment starting on line 33 regarding the inscription on the Freedom Tower and how the celebration of this law is a disgrace to those lives lost on 9-11.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (SF 1609 and HF 1312), would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks post-fertilization when scientific evidence shows that unborn children can feel pain. "We have many laws, customs, and traditions that seek to protect others from pain," said MCCL Legislative Director Andrea Rau, "Should we not extend this to the most vulnerable child — the unborn child?"

  • Although I, personally, think pain at any stage in development is real, this is a step forward in recognizing the baby’s humanness. The limits on abortion to protect the unborn at any stage are a win at this point in our nation and we should acknowledge that.

4. Finally, a poll conducted by Knights of Columbus shows an increase of those who identify as “pro-life” in recent reports. In January 2019, 38% of Americans considered themselves pro-life, verses 55% pro-choice. Also, 48% of Americans said they would completely ban abortions or limit them to extreme cases. However, on February 25 (less than 2 months later), an updated poll revealed that the two were tied at 47% with 58% of Americans saying they would ban all or most abortion.

  • I’m not much for polls, but we can all see that change is happening! Almost 10% MORE Americans claim to be pro-life, and more than 10% Americans want to ban abortions…that’s a radical change in just 2 months. See the power of our God!

“See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it as the Lord, the God of your fathers, told you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 1:21

Just as God was with the Israelites to claim what belonged to Him, we too, claim all that belongs to God for His glory. We can do this because we will not be alone, just as Moses & Joshua were not alone:

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

Together, for God’s glory,

Melanie Smeenk
